What's a Hoof Health Assessment?

This is a 60-minute video call that will give you the knowledge to make simple, positive changes for your horse. I’ll review photos and videos of your horse's hooves and go through what I see to help develop your eye.

Photo Analysis:

I’ll analyze photos (and X-rays if you have them) of each of your horse’s hooves to identify imbalance and any other areas of concern.

We’ll look at them together so you can start training your eyes.

Movement Analysis:

Pretty feet are great, but knowing how your horse feels moving in them is more important.

I’ll review video footage of your horse walking to assess how well they're moving.

Q&A Call

We'll meet on a video call where I'll go over everything with you and answer your questions.

Together, we’ll create a plan to help your horse.

Action Plan

You’ll walk away knowing what it will take to improve your horse’s hoof health.

Whether it’s having your trimmer or farrier make a few tweaks or taking the leap to pick up the tools yourself, you’ll know what’s next.

If I see something that falls outside my scope, I'll recommend involving your veterinarian. Horses experiencing lameness, acute pain, injury, or other medical concerns should be evaluated by a licensed veterinarian.

FAQ

Are you going to tell me to fire my farrier?

No, that choice is yours and yours alone. I'll help you understand what needs to change and why, so you can advocate for it.

Your current hoofcare professional may or may not be willing to make the changes your horse needs. If not, we can talk about finding another professional or you learning to trim yourself.

Does my horse have to be barefoot to benefit from an assessment?

No. But please understand I am a barefoot specialist. I chose this career path because I wholeheartedly believe in helping horses develop functional bare feet.

I'm happy to assess a shod horse and help you understand what I'm seeing underneath the shoeing package. If I believe transitioning to barefoot would benefit your horse, I'll explain why, what that transition could involve, and what support your horse may need to stay comfortable along the way.

Ultimately, what you choose to do with that information is up to you.

Will you look at my horse's X-rays?

I'd love to. However, only veterinarians are qualified to diagnose from X-rays. I can use veterinarian-provided X-rays as an educational tool to help you better understand hoof balance and the relationship between the internal structures and external hoof capsule

My horse is lame, and I don't know what's wrong. Can you help?

I can help you evaluate your horse's hoof balance from an educational perspective, but I cannot diagnose the cause of lameness. If your horse is lame, please contact your veterinarian first so they can evaluate your horse, provide appropriate pain management if needed, and diagnose or rule out medical conditions. Once appropriate veterinary care is in place, I'm happy to help you better understand the hoof-care side of the picture.

What do I need to book the assessment?

You need clear photos of each hoof and a short video of your horse walking. Once you book your appointment, you’ll get detailed instructions on how to take pics and videos.

Will you teach me to trim my horse?

Yes, but not on this call. Supporting horse owners to learn to trim is one of my favorite parts of my job. The purpose of this call is to know what your horse needs for healthier feet.

Once we know what’s going on, we can talk about what it will take to get you trimming.

I have multiple horses; can we talk about all of them?

Yes, but part of the assessment is teaching you to use your eyes. My suggestion for people with multiple horses is that we pick one horse to focus on during our hour together.

If we have time at the end, we can talk about additional horses. I’ll have you use what you learned to tell me what you see. From there, I can offer a discount for more sessions if we need more time to look at more feet.

What if I have more questions after the assessment?
